Whither metrication?

Back in the mid-1970s, I was all gung-ho for the US to convert to the metric system (SI). I asked my father about it, and he predicted that, by the mid-1980s, anything to do with cars would be metric: the cars themselves, gasoline (petrol) and oil sales, roads and highways, traffic signs, and so on.

We have the metrically-built cars now, but that's about it. Now I am beginning to believe that total metrication will never happen in my lifetime (I just turned 58), and I am ready to give up any hopes for it.

What I want to hear on this blog is other people's ideas about how we could turn up the heat about metrication in the US.
